Upper Volta (1960–1984)

Republic of Upper Volta

Independent from France in 1960, the country was renamed Burkina Faso — 'land of upright people' — by revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara in 1984.

The old name just described a river; the new one deliberately fused two local languages, Mooré and Dioula, so that no single ethnic group owned it.
