United Arab Republic (1958–1971)

Nasser's pan-Arab experiment fused Egypt and Syria into a single state in 1958. Syria seceded after barely three years, but Egypt kept flying the shared name until 1971.

For three years one country existed in two pieces with no land border — 600 km of Israel, Jordan and the Mediterranean lay between its Egyptian and Syrian halves.
