Soviet Union (1922–1991)

Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

The largest country ever to appear on a map dissolved on 26 December 1991, after the Belavezha Accords and a cascade of independence declarations broke it into fifteen sovereign republics.

At its height the USSR spanned eleven time zones — when workers in Kaliningrad sat down to lunch, fishermen in Kamchatka were already asleep.
