Republic of Texas (1836–1845)
After winning independence from Mexico at San Jacinto in 1836, Texas spent nine years as a sovereign nation — with its own navy, currency and foreign embassies — before joining the United States in 1845.
The Lone Star flag flew over an independent country with embassies in London and Paris; the London one sat above a wine shop that still marks the spot.
