Newfoundland (1907–1949)

Dominion of Newfoundland

A self-governing British dominion on equal footing with Canada and Australia, Newfoundland was bankrupted by war debt and the Depression, suspended its own parliament in 1934, and voted — 52 to 48 — to join Canada in 1949.

Newfoundland is the only nation that ever voluntarily gave up self-government, and then voted itself into another country entirely.
