Dominion of Ceylon

The island became an independent dominion in 1948 and a republic named Sri Lanka — 'resplendent island' — in 1972. The old colonial name wasn't fully retired from official use until 2011.

The old name never left the tea aisle — 'Ceylon tea' remains a protected trademark that Sri Lanka's exporters proudly refuse to rename.
