Burma (1948–1989)

Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma

Independent from Britain in 1948, Burma's military government changed the country's English name to Myanmar in 1989 — a switch some governments and newsrooms took decades to adopt.

Both names are the same word — 'Bama' and 'Myanma' are just the spoken and literary forms of one Burmese endonym.
