Austria-Hungary (1867–1918)

Austro-Hungarian Empire

The Habsburg dual monarchy ruled Central Europe as one emperor over two states with two parliaments and two capitals. Defeat in WWI shattered it into a half-dozen new nations in the autumn of 1918.

Its army issued commands in more than ten languages, and every soldier had to learn about seventy German words just to be drilled.
